Quik talks career timeline and relationships with Suge Knight

Following the release of his recent album The Midnight Hour, Compton pioneer DJ Quik was at Hot 97 for a brief sit-down with Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg on Juan Epstein. The interview opened up with discussing how he decided to be a musician, citing he was playing records from his parent’s collection before he could talk. He fell in love music after mixing his first record as a youth for Michael Jackson’s critical-acclaimed record, Thriller.

With the East Coast being in the limelight for DJ’s, he revealed Mixmaster Spade, DJ Ken, DJ Star and his favorite Joe Cooley as some of his early inspirations. He soon went to discuss his relationship with Suge Knigt during the Death Row days and revealed some rare stories his former manager encountered with people trying to test him the streets. Quik also talks mixing nearly the entire first disc of All Eyez On Me for 2pac, with the exception of California Love and How Do U Want It. Before leaving, he shed light on how the entire MC Eiht beef and reconciliation occurred, where the two had one of the greatest on wax battles of all time.

Soak up some game from the one of the most under-rated musicians in the urban world and be sure to support his new album in stores and iTunes now.
