Donald Glover Reveals Why He’s Retiring Childish Gambino

Final album coming soon?

Last weekend, Donald Glover was one of the headlines for the 2017 Governors Ball Music Festival. While performing gems from his albums, the Atlanta entertainer closed out his performance saying, I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.” This immediately shot his name to the top of worldwide trends, as the masses were left confused – just like the Randall’s Island crowd of NYC.

Well, Glover spoke with HuffPost about his pending retirement as Childish Gambino and went to explain his upcoming plans. With his recent Awaken, My Love! album being his most successful effort to date, he didn’t reveal what listeners could expect on the last project. However, you can take a look at the reasoning behind his retirement announcement below.

On his decision to retire from Childish Gambino.

“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” he said. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

His conflicts with being mainstream and punk.

“Like I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk. Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at ‘Atlanta’ as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”
