Live from Queens, meet Dreamville’s very own.

If you’re not too familiar with Bas yet, MTV got very personal with Dreamville’s first artist live from his basement in Queens, NY. In the interview, Nadeska Alexis visited his home and caught his mom upon entering the house, before going down to the place where Bas’ latest effort Last Winter was recorded.

Bas shared some of his most memorable experiences as an artist thus far, who his influences in Rap growing up were, if he feels any pressure being on Dreamville and how he got on the label to begin with, his relationship with J. Cole and how he got his start in rap after an unfortunate incident. Bas said he was a “college dropout with no direction,” and decided to pursue music and get away from the streets.

Interestingly enough, he also spoke on his family background and mentioned that he was born in France and came over to New York when he was eight years old. His father was a diplomat who went from Sudan to college in France and met his wife, before making the move to the United States a few years after. So he’s got a mesh of different cultures that he draws inspiration from.
