J. Cole – 1985 (DJ Premier Remix)

“1985” certainly caused an uproar around the rap community when it came out. Especially for the new generation of rappers. It was said that the KOD record was aimed at guys like Lil Pump, Smokepurppp and others, but J. Cole clarified it wasn’t. Old heads praised Cole World for calling out the new generation of talent and DJ Premier seems to be a fan of the track because he has now put his spin on it. Dubbing it the 1966 remix, Primo gets the signature scratches on the hook and puts his stamp on it by revamping the beat completely.

Here’s what Premier had to say about remixing the track:

“I bought J. Cole’s KOD LP as soon as it dropped with no warning to the fans; which I too am a fan. ‘1985’ resonated with me immediately, so I asked Cole if I could get the acapella and do an underground DJ version just for fun. He sent it and I just pieced some stab samples to keep it on some boom bap shit. Here it is!”
