These days, it’s rare that we get to see J. Cole sit-down for an interview anywhere. However, this week, the North Carolina rapper met up with Vulture for a rare conversation about what he’s been over the last few years. In the conversation, the Dreamville representative revealed that he’d been depressed with life since he rented a house in Los Angeles to work on 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

Cole went to say, “I didn’t like how I felt about my life. I’d been depressed for like three years. And I realized I was putting too much importance on what other people thought about me. Also, my mom going through her shit had a traumatic impact on me, and I never had a chance to process that shit. I just put my head down. I wasn’t having an honest conversation with myself.” Luckily, he revealed after his marriage, he’s now found balance and meaning to fuel his new creativity.

Before things closed out, he also spoke on being inspired to record from a recent Kendrick Lamar show on his DAMN tour. Cole praised the event saying, “Kendrick’s show gave me chills because I got to see what it was like to have a hit album performed, and it set off a desire. It was a recognition — like Oh, I’ll take that again. Like looking at a menu, I’ll have that again.”
