Justin Timberlake Reveals Label Politics Stopped Him Working with The Neptunes

The Neptunes gave Justin Timberlake hits like “Señorita,” “Like I Love You” and “Rock Your Body” on his 2002 album Justified, so why have they only just reunited now? In an excerpt from a new Zane Lowe interview, JT reveals it was down to label politics. Pharrell was adamant about getting The Clipse out of their deal with Jive Records, who Justin was also signed to, meaning working together would have been difficult.

“If I’m being totally honest about it, I was extremely hurt being caught up in the middle of it,” he says. “But at the same time, I had a shit load of money stolen from me by somebody else when I was in the group. I had already gone through legal troubles, and I kind of felt like, you know what, I’m at this point where I feel like I have so much ahead of me, I don’t want to be in the middle of the record label and somebody that I consider a friend, so I feel like I just removed myself from the situation.”

JT also talked about the incident with Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl, ahead of his own performance in this year’s show.
