Thursday evening, Kanye West shocked the world revealing that DONDA 2 would not be releasing on streaming services. That’s right, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, YouTube and TIDAL will not be getting the album next Tuesday.
Now, with a confirmed release date of February 22nd, Kanye has launched his stemplayer.com platform, which some are essentially calling it an NFT and streaming service of his own. Currently, the Stem Player is available now for the price of $200 USD, which is his way of using Prince’s stance against the entire music industry in the mid-90s.
For the release of his original DONDA album, Kanye turned down $100 million from Apple Music, which he believes the Stem Player rollout will outsell that previous offer. Following the original announcement, Ye confirmed that 67,000 are available to purchase, which his company is making 3,000 a day.
The new physical device is serving as his own streaming platform, also in follow-up to him completing his deal with Def Jam after 17-years. Moving as a completely independent artist, Kanye has complete control over his career, which we’re intrigued to see what happens heading forward.
Therefore, some believe he’s putting his career on the line with this move; but we’re under the assumption he has silent partners investing in this major rollout.
Essentially, you’ll be able to customize and edit any song you want, as your own personal Pro Tools for songs.
In the press release, Kanye said that most artists are only getting 17% of their streaming revenue. With the Stem Player device, he’s expected to recoup way more than he would ever see on streaming platforms.
