Kehlani Talks Influences, Her Start in Singing and Future

Get to know the Oakland singer

If you haven’t yet put yourself on Kehlani‘s music, you’re missing out. The Oakland, CA native caught up with Complex for their April/May issue to talk about the grind it took to where she’s at and how she got her start in music.

She actually didn’t want to be a singer at first, she was more into dance. When that fell through, Kehlani headed towards another path and joined a band, which actually made it far on America’s Got Talent. Unfortunately, that story didn’t end so well thanks to shady managers that were robbing the group from money and things got out of hand, so she split out on her own.

She says she owes her career to Nick Cannon, who helped her get to where she’s at now, after couch hopping and being damn near homeless after the band stint.

Kehlani also talks about her sexuality and why she’s so open, what we can expect from her YSBH (You Should Be Here) mixtape and why Oakland is such a melting pot of artists. There is also a link to PARTYNEXTDOOR, but she says they make good music and vibe together.
