Lil Wayne Sold Drake & Nicki Minaj’s Masters, Announces ‘IANAHB III’ Album

Last week, there were reports that Lil Wayne sold his masters to Universal Music Group in a deal worth over $100 million dollars.

Now, more details from the suit brought on by Weezy’s former manager have surfaced.

According to Music Business Worldwide, the deal was for Young Money’s entire catalog. This includes the masters for Drake and Nicki Minaj as well.

This is what the suit says:

“Plaintiffs are informed and believe… that, subsequent to [Sweeney’s] termination [as Wayne’s manager], specifically in or about June of 2020, Lil Wayne was able to sell the Young Money Masters to Universal Music Group for in excess of $100 Million.”

This means that apart from Wayne’s own catalog, the deal includes classic Drizzy and Nicki albums like Take Care, Nothing Was the Same, Views, and Scorpion as well as Pink Friday, The Pinkprint, and Queen.

After this news surfacing, Lil Wayne sold the catalogs for the cheap. Accounting for only his own at $100 million seems like a discount, but including the whole Young Money catalog for that much feels like bad business.

In an interview with Bumbu founder Brett Berish on Instagram Live, he was asked if there will never be a Nicki or Drake and Wayne responded passionately:

“There’s no such thing. I hate when people ask me that. There’s no such thing as the next Drake or the next Nicki. Back then, when I did discover Drake and Nicki, the game was different. Music was different. What I mean by that is they came in right before all the social media popped off. They came in when music had everybody’s attention. It had everybody looking to see how is next, what is next.

“You had a choice. This is what’s next? Do I like, yay or nay? That’s not what it is these days. Now it’s a thousand new things a day. Unfortunately, given that fact, you gotta be more than someone to become a Drake or a Nicki these days. Right when you think you Drake or you Nicki, they gon’ post something of a little six-year-old saying something that’s more popular than your songs. It don’t even matter no more.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he said he’s dropping his next solo album I Am Not a Human Being III.
