DJ Mustard said his next project would be him going back to the basics, and making more ratchetness. He’d been experimenting with the EDM for a minute, but true Mustard fans wanted to see him return to his original form. He didn’t lie, and Cold Summer is ratchet as they come. One of the strongest points of the album is the fact that YG is back and it makes all the difference, cause YG is over some Mustard beats for the first time in a long time. The intro is 3 musketeers (Mustard, YG & Ty Dolla $ign) and from there it only gets better.
The features are stacked, and they ALL deliver. There are standouts verses from Nipsey Hussle, YG, K Camp, Quavo, Meek Mill and a beautiful solo cut from Ty Dolla $ign. Ratchet standouts include the strip club anthem “Want Her,” which features a great hook and verse from Quavo and a solid verse from YG as well. The unlikely pairing of TeeCee400 and K Camp on “Shake That Ass,” which works perfectly somehow and “What These Bitches Want,” which features Meek, Nip and Ty Dolla $ign. The formulas Mustard put together on Cold Summer are top notch, and the beats are too. He’s able to make his die hard fans happy with this one, as well as possibly inspiring a new YG mixtape? Only time will tell, but for now we’ll ride to Cold Summer.
