A YouTube Hack Helped Post Malone’s “Rockstar” to No. 1

On Monday it was announced that Post Malone earned his first number one single on the Hot 100 with the 21-Savage featured “Rockstar.”

Reports suggest that part of the song’s success has come from a YouTube video posted by Republic Records. Instead of the actual song, the clip features the chorus on loop for 3 minutes and 38 seconds, which happens to be the running time of the actual song itself. There are no verses or even 21 Savage’s appearance, but the song poses as the real track under the title “Post Malone feat. 21 Savage – rockstar.” There is, however, a bio that sends viewers to the full song on various streaming services.

The YouTube video might not be the full song, but it has 44 million views and is gaining more than a million view per day. A view of the video counts towards the charts in the same way that a remix of an instrumental track would.
