Robin Thicke Sues Marvin Gaye’s Family In Order To Protect “Blurred Lines”

Here is a story that has the potential to get pretty messy. Late last night the Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Robin Thicke, T.I. & Pharrell are suing Marvin Gaye’s family to protect his number 1 song “Blurred Lines.” This comes in response to the Gaye family claiming that the song is too similar or has the same feel as Marvin’s classic “Got To Give It Up.”

“Plaintiffs, who have the utmost respect for and admiration of Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic and their musical legacies, reluctantly file this action in the face of multiple adverse claims from alleged successors in interest to those artists. Defendants continue to insist that plaintiffs’ massively successful composition, ‘Blurred Lines,’ copies ‘their’ compositions.”

The main case that Thicke and his people are making is that the Gaye family are taking ownership of an entire genre of music. The one thing that comes to mind is what this will do to Robin’s standing in the R&B community. We will continue to update with more details in the coming weeks as this story unfolds.

What do you think? Is “Blurred Lines” too similar to the classic Marvin Gaye tune “Got To Give It Up?”
