Multiplatinum selling rapper DMX has died today after a week-long battle for his life in the hospital following a heart attack. X was taken to White Plains hospital on April 2 following a drug overdose and was reported to be in a vegetative state as a result.
He has died at the age of 50.
His family has released a statement this morning updating the status of Earl Simmons:
“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
Doctors performed brain functioning tests on DMX this week, with the prognosis not being good. He did not show any signs of improvement and the family was deciding whether or not to withdraw life support.
Dark Man X came into the game with two platinum albums in one year, setting a record with It’s Dark & Hell Is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood. He also dabbled in acting with major roles in films like Belly, Romeo Must Die and Exit Wounds.
Throughout his career, X suffered a tough battle with drug addiction, one which he was very open about. He went through stints in jail and rehab, always showing his strength as he tried to remain clean and on the right path.
Fans and people in the industry are paying homage to Earl on social media, telling stories and mentioning why he was so impactful in their life.
Rest in peace X.
