The Roots’ Malik B Dies at 47

Malik B of The Roots has sadly passed away at the age of 47.

His cousin Don Champion confirmed the news on Twitter, but didn’t reveal the cause of death. “Mourning my beloved cousin today,” he said. “He was so talented and had a huge heart. I still remember when he and The Roots were starting out. He’d give me and my dad their cassette tapes to listen to. I miss you already, Malik. #RIP ❤️”

The Roots also paid tribute to Malik on Instagram. “It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Baset,” the post read. “May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, his loving brotherhood and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.”

Malik — real name Malik Abdul Basit — was a founding member of the Philly group alongside Questlove, Black Thought and Hub, back when they were known as the Square Roots. The rapper remained in the group for their first four albums, Organix, Do You Want More?!!!??!, Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart.

Rest in peace, Malik.
