The Weeknd Scrapped an Upbeat Album Before ‘My Dear Melancholy’

The Weeknd is on the cover of Time magazine this month as one of their 10 “Next Generation Leaders.” In the profile piece on him, Abel reveals that he ditched an entire album before working on his recent EP, My Dear Melancholy.

“Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done,” Weeknd said. “Which wasn’t melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life. Speaking on the project, which he made while he was still dating Selena Gomez, he says, “It was very upbeat—it was beautiful.” However, it was scrapped due to him moving on from that timeframe. “I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel.” Don’t try persuading him to release it either — he says that we’ll “never” hear it.
