Adam Silver Issues Memo to NBA Owners Over Resting Players

2018 All Star Game

Adam Silver is putting foot down and finally saying enough is enough when it comes to resting players during the season. After back to back Saturday Night ABC matchups where star players did not participate on a second night of a back-to-back, the NBA commissioner issued a memo to owners urging that this impacting the product of the league.

He calls it “an extremely significant issue for our league” and that teams will receive “significant penalties” for not abiding to the rules concerning injuries. The issue will be brought up at the next NBA board of governors meeting on April 6 in New York.

Not only does it hurt fans who may have purchased tickets to watch All Star players play, but it affects business partners who have invested in these big matchups on specific nights.

ESPN issued a statement concerning resting players during nationally televised games:

“As always, our aim is to serve NBA fans with the best matchups involving the league’s top stars and we share the fans’ disappointment. We understand this is a complex issue and we’re working closely with the NBA to best address it going forward from a media partnership standpoint.”

How Commissioner Silver will penalize teams or how he will take further action remains to be seen, but it is known that players are more likely to be hurt during road games that require back-to-back matchups. Also, the fans lose watching the benches play on big games.
