EXCLUSIVE: How Canelo Alvarez Becoming a Free Agent Changes Boxing & Why Boxers are Scared

Boxing is being plagued right now. . .

Following a nasty legal fight with DAZN, Canelo Alvarez was finally released by Golden Boy Promotions, which is ran by Oscar De La Hoya. This was due to his former promoters and company turning down fights, without his consent during prime years of his career (affecting his money).

They also dictated what fights were premium, which is where he lost money against opponents without bigger names; but he’s the big name. It got the point where, DAZN tried to force a third fight against Triple G; which real boxing heads knew was pointless. GGG was forced into a victory, with the cards against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in late 2019.

Over the last three years, Oscar tried to launch the DAZN but was unsuccessful in convincing casual people to purchase the app. Along with PBC Boxing keeping their fighters guarded for non-cross-promotional bouts, the app essentially failed. This week, Alvarez’s manager, Eddy Reynoso, confirmed that his fighter had officially been freed from the contract.

For whatever reason, some are expecting him to sign a 3-fight deal with Al Haymon’s PBC. However, others feel a management deal with Floyd Mayweather would be more ideal. Since Mayweather’s retirement, Canelo has been the biggest draw boxing, from gate attendance, buys and ratings.

He’s essentially the first fighter in this era to dictate his career, which is something most fighters are afraid to do. To get you to understand, this is similar to Russ or Tory Lanez being at the top the game and going independent – while still delivering great content. We expect him to immediately invade Premiere Boxing Champions, then fight both Jermall Charlo and Jermell Charlo.

Canelo hasn’t fought in over a year, as his last fight saw him defeating Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title. We’re assuming Alvarez will be looking to fight Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and maybe David Benavidez in 2021 if the Charlo brothers duck.

However, being on the open market, as the biggest draw, could have him dictating his entire career. Whether it’s one-fight deals for super-max money, or multi-fight deals, Canelo’s asking price will be insanely large. Lastly, don’t expect a Terence Crawford fight to happen anytime soon either.
