Knicks fans let out a sigh of relief. Carmelo Anthony is staying.
After speculation of Carmelo Anthony leaving New York for Chicago, Los Angeles or Houston, ‘Melo has decided to return to the Knicks after reaching a deal with Phil Jackson and company. The new 5-year contract is worth a reported $120 million.
Carmelo returns to the Knicks with a refreshed lineup (after trading Raymond Felton and Tyson Chandler) that includes Jose Calderon and Samuel Dalembert, as well as Wayne Ellington and Shane Larkin. He will also have a new coach on the sidelines, Derek Fisher, who is being taken under the wing of Phil Jackson and will most likely implement the triangle offense on the team next year.
UPDATE: The contract Carmelo Anthony signed is worth a reported $122 million, less than the $129 million max he could have gotten.
It was a stressful few weeks for the Knicks organization, who waited for Carmelo Anthony to sign, after hearing rumblings that he might bolt to other teams in chase of a title. New York was the only place who could offer him the most money and ultimately, that $30 million on the table was too much to pass up.
The Knicks rebuilding period continues.
Just a matter of hours until Carmelo Anthony informs the Knicks of his return on a five-year deal, as @FisolaNYDN reported this week.
