Carolina Panthers Cut Ties with RB DeAngelo Williams

Carolina ends an era with their former franchise RB

According to Molly Grantham of Charlotte Sports WBTV, the Carolina Panthers have released franchise rushing leader DeAngelo Williams. In the video clip above, the long-time the veteran running-back explains how the franchise released him after nine seasons, in a meeting with head coach Ron Rivera and GM Dave Gettleman.

While the entire conversation only lasted for 10 minutes, all parties involved left on respectful terms; but he did have personal ties to the organization that developed him from a child to a man. After battling through minor injuries over his tenure in North Carolina, DeAngelo missed 10 games last season – dealing with a broken hand, as well as thigh and ankle injuries. Now injury-free and looking to have a few more productive seasons on a contender, Williams will be sought out as one of the more targeted free agent running backs this off-season.

An obvious destination would be the defending Super Bowl Champion, New England Patriots, who are in desperate need of some kind of running game. Whether they decide to give him a look remains to be seen, but DeAngelo could put them in the forefront of repeating next year in Levi’s Stadium.
