Kansas City Chiefs Trade Alex Smith to Washington Redskins

The Alex Smith era in Kansas City is officially over, because the Chiefs are sending the quarterback to the Washington Redskins.

Details of the deal have not yet surfaced, but the deal can’t be made official until the new league year, which starts on March 14.

Smith’s tenure in Kansas City lasted five seasons and in 2017-2018, Smith threw for 4,042 yards, 26 touchdowns and had a passer rating of 104.7. Unfortunately, the Chiefs got bounced from the playoffs early, losing to the Tennessee Titans 22-21 in the AFC Wild Card round.

With the trade, the Chiefs will save about $17 million.

This pretty much guarantees Kirk Cousins‘ exit from Washington, as the team won’t have to franchise tag him and let him walk in free agency.

Patrick Mahomes, it’s your turn bro.

UPDATE: Kansas City will get a 2018 third round pick from Washington, as well as a player to be named. Meanwhile, Smith has just secured the bag for a reported $94 million over five years, with $71 million in guaranteed money. He will be making about $23.5 million per year.
