Today marks a very sad day in the sports world, as the league’s all-time three-point leader has walked away from the game of basketball. After taking the last two years to think about his future, as well as keeping his body in shape, Ray Allen has officially retired from the NBA at the age of 41.

Since coming into the league during 1996, Allen saw successful tenures with the Milwaukee Bucks, Seattle Supersonics, Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat – where he won titles at in his last two stops.

Following an NBA Finals loss during 2014 and LeBron James’ exit from the Heat, Ray was linked to re-join his friend in Cleveland last year, but now has written a letter to his younger self with help from The Players’ Tribune. He says, “I write this to you today as a 41-year-old man who is retiring from the game. I write to you as a man who is completely at peace with himself.”
