It was a wild night in Milan for the 2016 Champions League. The two Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid were competing for ultimate glory in Europe as the Madrid derby would decide who the best in the world was. Either way, La Liga was winning.
With news that Cristiano Ronaldo was good to play, many locked in Real Madrid as the favorite in the contest, but Atletico wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Especially with that world class defense. Although their style of play may not be flashy, they could easily score off a counter attack and grind out a win, like they did against Barcelona and Bayern Munich in previous rounds.
Real Madrid had a few chances to score in the beginning but it was Sergio Ramos who the squad up 1-0 with a header from Gareth Bale which happened to go under the legs of Oblak. We actually didn’t even see Ramos touch the ball, but he was closest to the volley and was awarded the goal. There was a little controversy on whether he was offside or not, but that’s up to interpretation depending on who you ask.
Atletico had a chance to equalize early into the second half thanks to a penalty kick, but Antoine Griezmann hit the top of the cross bar and missed the kick in a crucial situation.

Griezmann Misses Critical PK
It took a lot of battling and it wasn’t until the 78th minute that Atletico Madrid leveled the score, thanks to Carraso coming off the bench and putting one at the back of the net thanks to a beautiful cross by Juanfran.

Carrasco Off The Bench For The Equalizer
Real Madrid had plenty of chances to put this one away, but failed to do so because of the heroics of Oblak and the defense getting a stop every chance they got.
The game finally went into extra time after ending regulation at 1-1 and things didn’t change much in the extra period. Both teams looked tired and weren’t attacking as much.
Both teams just wanted to take into penalty kicks and try to end each other there.
Unfortunately for Atletico, it was heartbreak and eventual defeat when Juanfran went up for his kick and went too wide, missing the shot off the post.
All it took was a score from Ronaldo to seal the victory and that’s exactly what happened.

CR7 Winning Penalty Kick
The 2014 Champions League rematch did not go Atletico Madrid’s way, giving Real Madrid another trophy and their second win in three years. The victory gives them their 11th title in history, with Zinedine Zidane becoming the seventh man to win the Champions League as a player and a manager.
HALA MADRID!
