Steve Smith Sr. Retires After 16 Years In the NFL

Steve Smith Sr. is going out as one of the most fiery and best wide receivers of this generation.

After spending a bulk of his career with the Carolina Panthers, Smith made it a priority to prove why he was still one of the best when he went to the Baltimore Ravens in 2004.

A few days after Christmas, Steve announced that he was “89 percent sure” that he would retire after the season, but he confirmed it after today’s 27-10 loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.

After the game, he was clearly emotional and talked about how much he wanted to be with his family now, and what it means to be there for his kids. He mentioned is moving back to Charlotte, has a lot of catching up to do and looks forward to the next chapter of his life.

At the post-game press conference he joked that he was thinking of ice cream when the game was ending.

Smith didn’t go out like Kobe Bryant, he finished the game with only three catches for 34 yards. But he finishes his career as a five-time Pro Bowl player and 12th in NFL history in receptions (1,028) and seventh in all-time receiving yards (14,697).

Salute to Steve Smith Sr.
