Is Digital Gaming Almost The Standard?
Much like our Digital vs. Physical article last year, we’re still waiting for digital games to become mainstream. While the price still remains the same as retail, you own the game for life – with no misplacements or scratching to encounter. Unfortunately, most consumers don’t have the budget to fully jump digital, since there’s no trade-in value, but if you have a friend and their profile password (search YouTube game sharing), it’s one of the best secrets many are investing in and saving money with currently.
Retailers GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy have significantly seen a drop in software sales over the last few months, in comparison to previous ones. With the option of pre-loading to ensure you’ll have the game ready to start at midnight (over sooner in some instances), we’ve already completely jumped in the digital wave and no longer own any physical disc of gaming.
There is an issue of space limitations, which will obviously require some to purchase another external hard drive; but you’ll have to do that anyway, since every game requires a day-one installation on the physical end. Once prices are slashed some in comparison to retail and gamers have titles earlier than physical, that’s when we’ll see a full takeover in the digital. With Apple’s iOS, Amazon TV and Google Play seeing success in digital gaming, Sony and Microsoft will have to make proper adjustments to avoid a hostile takeover.
