HBO Explains Why ‘Westworld’ Isn’t for Casual Viewers

Is this now?

Following some season two finale confusion, which led to a lot of backlash from viewers, HBO finally addresses Westworld. Considering the mind-fuck most experienced earlier this summer with series, many are still confused at different timelines being presented at once.

While our suggestion would be to watch episodes breakdowns on HBO and YouTube, some are just frustrated with keeping up. This week, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys spoke about the widespread backlash at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Los Angeles this week.

He went to say, “I’m not sure I would agree that the backlash was ‘widespread’. We’re thrilled about the Emmy nominations. What I love about Westworld is that the people who love it really love it. Even the people who dislike it feel the need to discuss it and talk about it and let you know they dislike and debate it. And for a show to arouse that kind of feeling, that’s what we want.”

This was followed up with a response to fans as he said, “We sent out the first five episodes to critics and most of the reviews felt the storytelling had been clarified. Look, it’s not for casual viewers. It requires your attention. Showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy like to challenge their viewers and many feel they are rewarded by that. It’s a unique show and that’s what we look for.”

Considering Westworld isn’t scheduled to continue filming until next summer, that means the show will be on hiatus for nearly two years for some to properly re-watch.
