“Hashtag” Named Word Of The Year

It has reached that point in the year when the useful American Dialect Society calculates the total votes for the official Word Of The Year data. For 2012, highly talked about words included “gangnam style”, “YOLO” and “fiscal cliff” amongst others. However, “hashtag” proved to have the highest number of votes, which doesn’t come as a surprise when you think about it for a moment. Undoubtedly, the word has been a huge talking point from Twitter thanks to the countless conversations about the bizarre subjects that are currently trending. Member of the ASD Ben Zimmer claimed that the Word Of The Year had been an “ubiquitous phenomenon in online talk”. You may be wondering where your picks of the year were, but it’s fair to say that there was plenty of phrases that made their way across the world over the 12 months.
