Spotify may have been here first, but Apple Music has been making major moves since it first launched in June last year. According to a report from Buzzfeed, Apple Music has doubled subscriptions to 20 million since the start of 2016. This includes the $9.99 individual plan, $4.99 student plan and $14.99 family plan.
In comparison, it took Spotify around seven years to reach 20 million, but it’s important to remember that it launched in a completely different climate. Spotify is still leading the way in streaming with 40 million paid subscribers as of September.
A couple of interesting stats: 60% of Apple Music subscribers haven’t bought music from the iTunes store in the last 12 months, and 50% of overall subscribers are outside of the US.
