Lil Wayne Sues Universal Music Over Profits from Drake, Nicki Minaj & Tyga

Carter V on the way, though?

Earlier today, Lil Wayne filed a federal lawsuit against Universal Music Group – citing the company is shorting him millions and owes for discovering and nurturing Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga.

With his $51 Million Dollar lawsuit against Birdman and Cash Money Records, Inc. still pending in Louisiana, he’s currently demanding at least $20 million from the entertainment company. In 2003, UMG and CMR agreed to a $100 Million deal, which gave Birdman and his immediate partners a hefty advance. However, the music company has been slowing repaying itself from the investment, with profits that Tunechi believes should be going to his bank account(s).

The original agreement in place, allowed a 51%-49% in label profits between Cash Money and Tunechi – which is similar to the same ownership deal between the two for Young Money. The contract expired last summer, putting Drake’s long-awaited Views From the 6 album in cross-hairs.

It still hasn’t been confirmed whether or not his 2015 mixtapes If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late and What a Time to Be Alive with Future (both released through Cash Money and Universal) were his last obligations; but the world will find out in a few days when the 6-God drops the album.

Take a look at part of the complaint filed in California courts below.

With Universal’s knowledge of Lil Wayne’s rights to partial ownership and profits from those artists, Universal and Cash Money entered into a series of agreements which, among other things, diverted Lil Wayne’s substantial profits to repay debts of Cash Money. As a result, 100% of the profits that should have been paid to Lil Wayne as a result of his ownership of Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga records have been seized by Universal to repay debts that were neither incurred by nor were the obligations of Lil Wayne.

UMG hasn’t responded to the suit, but we’ll keep you updated on the story.
