Mack explains ‘White Privilege II’ mentions

Last week, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis dropped arguably their most controversial track to date, with White Privilege II.” The track is only three days removed from its public rollout and raised some eyebrows with mentioning Iggy Azalea during the track (see: the title).

With the single still gaining notoriety from social and professional media, Mack sat down with Rolling Stone to talk about their track’s reception from fans – including clearing up any confusion on why he mentioned Iggy Azalea or Miley Cyrus. Before even recording the song, he felt guilt from previous accomplishments, including the infamous GRAMMYS controversy with Kendrick Lamar in 2014.

However, after a conversation with mystery legendary rapper he refused to name-drop, he felt it was important to confront structural racism. Take a look at the excerpt below, from the first of many interviews the Seattle duo can expect to discuses their decision to shed light on a major issue.

On referencing Iggy on new single

“For me, that second verse is unpacking. It’s an unpacking moment of internalized criticism and self-doubt, and ‘What have I done,’ and letting the criticism infiltrate who I am. ‘Why am I insecure at a protest?’ And I think that people get put into boxes, and the conversation around cultural appropriation — I was at the forefront of that, rightfully so. And that conversation also included Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea, and that’s why their names are on the record.”
