Talk about dropping gems. In this 15-minute interview, The-Dream speaks on an array of subjects, which all tie in with his involvement in Jay-Z‘s Magna Carta Holy Grail album. As a writer for that specific track, he says it was the first track finished (way back when Watch The Throne was being finished, before “Otis” and “No Church In The Wild”), explains what inspired the record and reveals that it spawned from a Beyoncé session.
Then the talk took a left turn and he dished out plenty of gems of the inner dealings of the music industry. Some of the highlights include how he feels about record sales vs. marketing and how the tide is turning, how artists try find a “vibe” to craft classic records, the fact that iTunes has been fucking artists up for years, his success on “Holy Grail” vs. his solo effort, and says MCHG only took about two weeks of work to finish.
It sounds like partnering with corporations is going to be the new norm.
