If you’re wondering how Hip-Hop completely took over culture and how it managed to influence every aspect of the mainstream, even making it all the way to politics, all your questions will be answered in VH1’s newest documentary series. The upcoming Rock Doc directed by Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys) will be patterned after Steve Stout’s book “The Tanning of America: How Hip-Hop Created a Culture That Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy” and it will unearth footage from some iconic moments in Hip-Hop.

Among the clips we will see in the documentary: Dr. Dre hearing Eminem rap for the first time, Russell Simmons getting a deal with Adidas at a Run DMC concert, Tommy Hilfiger riding around Harlem for inspiration on baggy jeans in the ’90s, and footage of the Harvard apartment where they founded The Source magazine.

Commentary will come from the likes of Mariah Carey, Diddy, Nas, Fab 5 Freddy, Ron Howard, Dr. Dre, Pharrell, Jimmy Iovine, and a whole bunch more.

“The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop” airs on VH1 this February.
