Chris Paul Declines Clippers Player Option and Turns to Free Agency

RIP Lob City

The Los Angeles Clippers seem to be going into a new era because as soon as news surfaced that Blake Griffin would be opting out of his contract with the team, more reports have surfaced that Chris Paul will too. This means both All-Stars are heading into unrestricted free agency for the 2017-2018 season.

Paul is a nine-time All-Star and eight-time member of an All-NBA team and is regarded as one of the best point guards in the league, but his post-season track record has been anything less than stellar. Throughout his career, he has not made it past the second round of the playoffs and he wants to change that badly, to join a championship contender.

The Clippers certainly had the pieces to make it happen, but injuries have derailed their window fast and closed it with the rise of the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference.

CP3 was definitely the facilitator in the Lob City era and whether or not he returns to the team remains to be seen. Suitors for his services include the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets, with other teams like the Denver Nuggets also a team interested. Joining Coach Popovich and Kawhi Leonard in San Antonio would be the most likely path to a championship run and it seems like the Spurs are already making moves to make it happen.

On the other side of the coin, Steve Balmer could pay CP3 a super max contract of around $205 million and cash out. Who in their right mind would turn that down?

We’ll see what happens with Paul in the coming weeks. Anything can happen in the NBA.
