Common Interviews Serena Williams for ESPN’s The Undefeated

If you listened to Common‘s 11th studio album Black America Again, you would know that he’s tackling social issues in the African American community on the effort. Coming from Compton, Serena Williams has been exemplary as someone who has overcome such odds.

ESPN sat down with the former couple in The Undefeated In-Depth: Serena with Common to speak on a few things that have impacted them both in their careers: fame, sports, race and gender.

Throughout their conversation, Serena shared some of the racism she faced growing up playing tennis, especially when there were mostly whites playing on the courts, how she felt boycotting the Indian Wells tournament for 14 years and why she did, how things have changed in their communities the past 10 years, not being in the conversation for being the ‘greatest athlete ever,’ her fears and a whole lot more.
