Eleider Alvarez Upsets Sergey Kovalev in Boxing Knockout of the Year

Never the same after Andre Ward

Saturday night, HBO returned to Atlantic City for a big Light Heavyweight Championship match. We saw then-current champion Sergey Kovalev pitted up against undefeated Eleider Alvarez.

Majority of odds makers heavily favored Kovalev to convincingly win the bout, since he was on home court with HBO. However, we knew Andre Ward had damaged him in recent bouts with body punches, something Alvarez is known for – enabling a few extra bucks to hit our pockets.

Throughout the fight, it was feeling out process, with Kovalev using the majority of his energy in the first five rounds. However, by the sixth, Sergey was heavily winded, as Alvarez had already built up his approach of landing multiple body shots in earlier moments of the fight.

After setting up some head shots in round 6, Eleider scored three consecutive knockdowns on his opponent, as the fight was stopped to prevent further damage to Kovalev.

With Alvarez winning the WBO light heavyweight title, many are already speculating that unification fight between him and Dmitry Bivol could be in the works for his WBA light-heavyweight title.

Take a look at highlights below of the fight.
