Hawks Advance to Eastern Conference Finals After Paul Pierce Shot Waived Off

IT DIDN’T COUNT!

The Washington Wizards were at home. They were supposed to tie up the series with the Atlanta Hawks and take it to Game 7. They were supposed to send the game into overtime. Except none of those things happened on Friday night. And Washington fans were left stunned.

Just when it looked like the Hawks were going to run away with the lead and seal it, the Wizards crawled back and took the lead after a few defensive stops and cold shooting from Kyle Korver.

After missed free-throws by both Nene and John Wall down the stretch, a steal that brought the game closer and a missed free throw by Al Horford, it all came down to one play with 6.4 seconds left. Whether the ball was supposed to end up in Wall’s hands for the final shot is unclear, but Paul Pierce was the one with it with time running out and a desperation shot as the clock expired.

The 3-pointer went in, but after review, it was waived off.

The call sent the Wizards home in shock and now the Hawks will face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, starting next week.

DeMarre Carroll led Atlanta in scoring with 25 points, while Horford and Jeff Teague both scored 20 points. Bradley Beal had 29 for the Wizards and Wall contributed 20 in the loss.
