Remember when Kevin Durant said he’d take less money to keep the Golden State Warriors band back together and retain some key free agents from this year’s class?
KD kept to his word and is taking a $9 million dollar pay cut annually. Durant has signed for a less-than-max deal with the Dubs, worth a reported 2-years, $53 million. He will also have a player option on the second year and will probably opt out in the summer of 2018.
The NBA Finals MVP could have taken the $34 million dollar max per year, but has decided to do his part and keep this championship team together to contend for more rings.
Both Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston were locked in for the next few years, with the Warriors eyeing to retain the services of JaVale McGee.
Of course, this would have been a lot different if Iggy would have jumped ship and went to another team, but KD still would have taken less money to revamp the roster and make another NBA Finals run next season. At a time where players are taking less money than they actually deserve, it’s a little refreshing to see KD take less to stay somewhere. It’s clear his goal is to keep winning.
