“There’s a revolution happening in women’s sports thanks to UFC”

In recent weeks, Ronda Rousey has been on arguably the biggest promo runs ever for her career. After headlining her first ever pay-per-view for UFC last month in the fastest title submission defense ever, Rousey is quickly becoming the face of the brand – due to steroid usage and drug failings from other male fighters.

Currently on co-promo run for her role in Furious 7 next Friday, the undefeated star is in Albany, NY to face the state Assembly. Ronda will be meeting with Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is open to finally legalizing MMA. Rowdy Ronda, however, will need to clear a few hurdles to help pass legislation in the chamber.

For many years, former Assemblyman Sheldon Silver has refused to bring the bill to the floor for a vote, hindering MMA growth within the entire state. Now with Carl Heastie assuming the reigns as speaker, he’s been public in recent years for the sport – even sponsoring a bill to legalize it New York. Currently, the bill this year has 64 sponsors, but needs 76 in total to get passed through legislation.

“There’s a revolution happening in women’s sports just because of the UFC. I’d be surprised if the bill wouldn’t pass this year. I have a huge sense of optimism this year. I think Madison Square Garden is such an iconic thing. I always wanted to have that opportunity. Your shelf life is short. I’d hate to see the bill pass after I’ve already retired.”
