No biopic just yet. . . . .

After announcing his own digital channel a few weeks ago, Damon Dash is planning to share some stories from the iconic record label he helped build in NYC, Roc-A-Fella Records.

With help from executive producer Lemuel Plummer, Damon is set to tell his side of the story in regards to the rise-and-fall of the 1996-founded label he built with Kareem Burke and Jay-Z.

Envisioned to use presentation influences from HBO’s Vinyl and FX’s The People Vs OJ Simpson, the show will focus on the behind-the-scenes side of things regarding the company – and not the music.

So, instead of a biopic or centered around the label’s principals, the show will center on the Roc movement during its original 8-year run, before selling the company in December 2004.

Take a look at both Dame and Plummer explaining their upcoming project below. After you ready the quotes, let us know in the comments if you’re intrigued about the new some from Dash.

Dame on not making the story about him and about the label itself.

“As much music as I could get, I know what I own, and there’s a lot of different artists that would probably not have a problem with participating. And hopefully Jay doesn’t either, but as of yet we haven’t crossed that barrier. I’m not worried about that. What defined what we were doing is everything that was in my life equals Roc-A-Fella … there was a point of view at Roc-A-Fella I’m not quite sure people knew what it was. We had so much going on.

My experience is colorless. The reason why Roc-A-Fella crossed and became so essential to pop culture is that we were probably the most authentic people that were also so sophisticated. My experience doing white people shit is just as heavy as my experiences doing black people shit. Actually I think I’ve done white people shit better than white people.”

Executive Producer Lemuel Plummer on telling the story of The Roc.

“It means a lot that Damon trusts us to tell the story – the true story – of how two global music icons got their start and did nothing less than redefine pop culture. That story is so unbelievable and yet so true that we know we have an awesome responsibility as storytellers to get things right. It’s not about the music that you hear. It’s about the actual [behind-the-scenes] story that’s never been told.”
