Universal Music Group Will No Longer Allow Apple Music Exclusives

The streaming wars have been at an all-time high the past year, with artists releasing exclusives with streaming platforms and aligning themselves with certain ones. But like always, the game is changing and Universal Music Group is the one setting the precedent.

Thanks to UMG’s CEO Lucian Grange, artists under the umbrella of the record label (Def Jam, Interscope, Cash Money, EMI, etc.) will no longer be able to provide TIDAL, Apple Music or Spotify exclusives.

Frank Ocean’s album will actually be the last to be a streaming exclusive (Endless, not Blonde), fulfilling his contract with the label and now becoming a free agent.

Whether any other labels will follow suit, remains to be seen, but it seems like UMG is putting the hammer down and protecting their assets.
