Chauncey Billups Does Not Want the Cavaliers GM Job

When the Cleveland Cavaliers sent David Griffin packing (even after LeBron James championed his return), you knew the front office was in turmoil and might be for this offseason. And at the worst time, too. We’re at the start of free agency and the Cavs have no GM, with moves slipping away from their fingertips. Now, the front runner in taking over has withdrawn his name from the running.

Chauncey Billups has passed up the job of president of basketball operations out in The Land because the timing is all wrong. He will remain at ESPN as analyst for now.

“I have great respect for Dan Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and I greatly appreciate the discussions we had regarding their organization. As I have conveyed before, ultimately I would like to lead a team’s basketball operation and be a part of a successful franchise. But presently, the timing just isn’t right to delve into that role in Cleveland. In the meantime, I will continue to focus on broadcasting and my other business endeavors.”

Billups is also part of Ice Cube‘s BIG3 League, which he was seen playing in recently.

As for the Cavs, Koby Altman (the team’s assistant GM) has been working hard behind-the-scenes to hold down the fort for now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
