Lonzo Ball Wins 2017 Summer League MVP Award

Even though his 2017 Summer League debut with the Los Angeles Lakers was a complete disaster and horrible performance, the No. 2 pick in the NBA Draft Lonzo Ball bounced back.

Not only once, but a few times.

Ball got four triple doubles throughout NBA Summer League, the most of anyone in the history of the NBA. He averaged 9.3 assists in Vegas Summer League, which was also the most in history. With those kind of stats (he also averaged 16.3 ppg and 7.7 rpg), it’s only right he won the MVP Award. The last person to win the award the season after getting drafted? Damian Lillard. And before him, John Wall and Blake Griffin. So, not bad company there.

Though his play on the court was getting rave reviews, what shoes he was wearing was also very much talked about. Big Baller vs. Nike. Adidas vs. Under Armour. It seems like every night he laced up he was being asked about why he was wearing that specific brand.

Most are speculating he is only doing it to start up a bidding war.

Regardless, the Lakers made it to the championship game, but Ball didn’t play because of a calf strain. His team still beat the Portland Trail Blazers, thanks to Kyle Kuzma, who dropped 30 points on them and ended up winning the MVP of the championship game.

Magic Johnson said after the game that the Lakers were back and they’re building for the future. With these two and some of the pieces they already have, they might actually be better next season. Will it be enough for a playoff run? We’ll see soon enough.
