Magic Johnson Named President of Basketball Operations for Lakers

With only two days left until the trade deadline and the Los Angeles Lakers desperate to make a move to keep that Top 3 protected pick in the upcoming NBA Draft, Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss has made a bold move and named Magic Johnson as President of Basketball Operations.

So what does that mean for who was in charge? Well, her brother Jim Buss will no longer serve as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and Mitch Kupchak has been fired as General Manager.

This is what Jeanie had to say of the big moves today:

“Today I took a series of actions I believe will return the Lakers to the heights Dr. Jerry Buss demanded and our fans rightly expect. Effective immediately, Earvin Johnson will be in charge of all basketball operations and will report directly to me. Our search for a new General Manager to work with Earvin and Coach Luke Walton is well underway and we hope to announce a new General Manager in short order. Together, Earvin, Luke and our new General Manager will establish the foundation for the next generation of Los Angeles Lakers greatness.

I took these actions today to achieve one goal: Everyone associated with the Lakers will now be pulling in the same direction, the direction established by Earvin and myself. We are determined to get back to competing to win NBA championships again.”

After multiple seasons of being a lottery team and suffering some of the worst years in franchise history, it needed to be done. Mrs. Buss finally taken command of the organization and wants to return it to its winning ways.

Can Magic bring the Showtime Lake Show back to L.A.?

UPDATE: Magic makes his first move as GM, trading away Lou Williams to the Houston Rockets for Cory Brewer and their unprotected first round pick.
