NBA Implements New “Kevin Love Rule” for Rookies

The future of the NBA……

Earlier this week, the NBAPA agreed to a new CBA, which ended all belief that a lockout was near. As details emerge from the collective bargaining agreement throughout the fourth quarter, info has emerged on a new rule that will allow teams to keep two designated first-time free agents.

For whatever reason, it’s being dubbed the Kevin Love rule, because he wanted to play with the league’s best player and win multiple championships left the Minnesota Timberwolves after a contract dispute a few seasons ago. During 2011, Minny elected to use their designated player tag on Ricky Rubio, and declined to offer love a five-year deal – opting to only a three-year deal instead.

The move soon led to an implosion within, as the Wolves were forced to deal their player to LeBron James the Cleveland Cavaliers and upgrade to their new franchise player in Karl Anthony-Towns, alongside Zach LaVine and Andrew Wiggins. Coincidentally, the Wolves will face that same dilemma next summer, when Wiggins is eligible for a contract extension.

With the pressure relieved, the team can now make maximum contract offers to both Wiggins and Towns. Other emerging teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers (see: above picture) will also be able to keep pairs of franchise players in the next few years.
