Timofey Mozgov Inks 4-Year, $64M Deal with Lakers

Timofey Mozgov

NBA free agency has officially kicked off and the phones, rumors and deals are going into overdrive. So who is the first person to sign a deal to a new team? Timofey Mozgov.

The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to a deal bringing the fringe Cleveland Cavaliers center to Hollywood on a four-year deal worth $64 million contract.

The 30-year old center saw his role in Cleveland completely diminish this past season, after being a key piece of the Cavs 2014-15 season. He went from starting every game in the playoffs that season, to only coming in during garbage time in this year’s championship run.

As baffled as we are about the Lakers front office making this move, it’s clear Jim Buss wants to step down sooner than expected, considering there were better choices on the market than Mosgov. Remember Hassan Whiteside? What about Bismack Biyombo? Would the Golden State Warriors even match a max deal for poaching Festus Ezeli?

With the cap increasing, this is the year of mediocre players getting paid, though.
