Warner Makes Major DC Film Changes after ‘Justice League’ Box Office Flop

RIP Zack Snyder & Ben Affleck?

In wake of Justice League’s lackluster box office performance this holiday season (in comparison to Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok), Warner Bros. is officially restructuring the DC Extended Universe. Variety revealed this week, that Jon Berg will no longer solely run DC Films production division. He will now become a production partner with Roy Lee, who previously curated Stephen King’s IT.

The company is expected to replace Berg by January 2018, as Warner Bros. Picture Group President Toby Emmerich said, “This is something that Jon approached me about six months ago, and he expressed his goal was to ultimately be a producer at the studio.”

This move will now bring the DCEU under the same roof as Warner Films, as an integration of DC Films will likely take place with their next major release, Aquaman.

They also plan to focus on more solo character-driven projects for the next few years, which means Suicide Squad and Justice League sequels could be on hold for the time being. With corporate leaders at Time Warner growing impatient in Zack Snyder directing future DC Films, they could likely step-in and have the studio remove his lead director role of the Universe.

Last but not least, Geoff Johns is set to continue his role as chief creative officer at DC Entertainment. However, his role beyond 2017 could be diminished to just an advisor down the line.
